Rental Policies

Additional drivers are permitted at a cost of NZD 3.00 + tax per day, with a maximum charge of NZD 42.00 + tax per rental. Rental conditions apply to all additional drivers.

Minimum rental age is 21 years for car groups ECMR (Economy), CDAR (Compact), IDAR (Intermediate), FDAR (Full Size) and IFAR (Intermediate 4x4), and 25 years for all other car groups. There is no maximum rental age. There is a young drivers surcharge of NZD 24.00 + tax per day, with a maximum charge of NZD 330.00 + tax per rental for driver's aged 21 - 24 years of age.

Cross border travel is not permitted into any island on the ferry. Customers can take the car from island to island but they must give 72 hours advance notice to the rental location prior to crossing the border. The customer must leave the rental car on one side of the island, cross on the ferry, and then collect another rental car. Note: Only one booking is required, but it is mandatory to provide the date and time of ferry crossing so that the relevant branches can be notified to ensure that a vehicle is ready for clients when they arrive off the ferry. If the customer is traveling from Picton to Wellington then the customer will leave the vehicle at the rental station located at the ferry terminal, and pick up the replacement vehicle from the rental station at Wellington ferry terminal. If the customer is traveling from Wellington to Picton then the customer should return the vehicle to the rental station at Wellington ferry terminal and pick up the replacement from the rental station at Picton.

One-Way rentals are permitted for all cars in New Zealand and cost as follows: Retail: NZD 75.00 + tax for rentals of 1-6 days, and free of charge for rentals over 7 days. Corporate/Tour Accounts: NZD 75.00 + tax for rentals of 1-2 days, and free of charge for rentals over 3 days. One-Way rentals from Auckland Airport to Auckland downtown are permitted free of charge. The car will be supplied with a full tank of fuel. Customers must return the car with a full tank or refuelling charges of 12.5 percent will apply.

Customers must present a full and valid driving licence that has been held for at least one year. An International driving licence/permit is not required.

All major credit cards are accepted (American Express/Diners Club/MasterCard/Visa). National vouchers & Travellers cheques are also accepted. Debit cards (Visa Delta/Switch), National charge cards, Eurocheques and Cash are not accepted. There is no deposit required in New Zealand. A credit card fee of NZD 1.5% will be charged to all reservations paid via any credit card.

To rent a car from Enterprise Rent-A-Car in the United States and Canada, you will need the following:

  • To be 25 years old 
  • A valid driver's license with a photo
  • A photo ID (For example: a driver’s license or passport)
  • Credit or debit card (check the acceptable forms of payment at the location you’re renting from)

Some locations may require additional information, including but not limited to: 

  • An International Driving Permit (IDP): If the license is written in a language or characters different to those of the country of rental, an IDP is also required. Renters are advised to check whether local authorities require foreign drivers to present an International Driving Permit to avoid the risk of potential fines. Renters with licenses from countries who are not part of the International Driving Permit Agreement should carry a certified translation.
  • Return travel and accommodation information: Visitors to the UK must also provide proof of return travel and accommodation information while in the UK. 

As a customer, you have a choice as to how you would like to pay for fuel.

Fuel Policy at Non-Airport locations:

  • You may refuel the vehicle to the same fuel level you received when you picked up the vehicle, or if you choose not to refuel the vehicle to the same fuel level, you will be charged the local Enterprise rate which is typically above the local pump price. An additional refueling charge may apply at some locations.
  • A full tank of gas is not guaranteed.

Fuel Policy at Airport Car Rental Locations:

  • You may refuel the vehicle to the same fuel level you received when you picked up the vehicle, or if you choose not to refuel the vehicle to the same fuel level, you will be charged the local Enterprise rate which is typically above the local pump price. An additional refueling charge may apply at some locations.
  • You may opt to pre-pay for fuel -- Pre-pay gives you two conveniences:
    • You can avoid the hassle of having to fuel up the vehicle before returning.
    • Pre-pay fuel option is calculated at the local rate of gas minus a per gallon discount.

Note: Prepaid fuel is only sold in full tanks at the discounted price per gallon and is not refundable. Local fuel rates will vary by the area you are renting a vehicle.
