Places To Visit Outside Nantes

Away from the urban population centres, the Pays de la Loire retains a rural character with many attractive towns and villages within easy reach of Nantes. Redon is just over 60 minutes' drive northwest of Nantes, via the N137 and D614, a route that skirts along the eastern boundary of the Parc Naturel Régional de Brière, or Brière Regional Natural Park. The town was built around the Abbey of Saint Sauveur, at the confluence of the rivers Vilaine and Oust, and is a central point on the Nantes-Brest canal. The medieval walled town of Vannes, a similar distance west of Redon, via the D775, is a popular departure point for boat trips around the Gulf of Morbihan.

Parking Tour Bretagne, on Place de Bretagne, with 663 spaces and Parking Decré-Bouffay, on Rue du Moulin, with 614 spaces, provide central, if rather cramped, parking in the immediate vicinity of the historic centre. Parking Feydeau, on Cours Commandant d'Estienne d'Orves, with 520 spaces, is a little further away, but still fairly central and provides spacious parking spaces, unlike some of the other car parks in Nantes. With the exception of the historic centre, which is largely pedestrianised, Nantes is easily navigable by car, although it's probably worth adding 25%, or more, to your journey time if you're travelling at morning or evening peak times.
