Caen is a city on the northern coast of France, in the Calvados region of Normandy. The port of Ouistreham, outside the city centre, is a terminal for ferries from Portsmouth, so Caen is the starting point for many holidays in France. The city itself has historical buildings dating back to William the Conqueror, and is convenient for many attractions close by. Attractions In Caen

The city of Caen is closely associated with William the Conqueror, who built Caen Castle and is buried in the abbey. The castle now houses the Museum of Normandy and the Caen Museum of Fine Arts. For a fun take on history, visit the Festyland theme park, just outside the city, for rides and characters based on the Normans and the events of 1066, as well as Vikings and pirates. There are historic buildings to be found in Caen, even though much of the city was destroyed by bombing during the Second World War. The Memorial for Peace tells the story of the 1944 Battle of Normandy and other twentieth-century conflicts, and promotes world peace through its exhibitions. Caen is a great place to enjoy the food and drink specialities of the region, such as cheese, seafood, lamb, and, of course, Calvados. It is also a shopping destination, with fashion boutiques and the nearby Mondeville 2 shopping centre.

Places To Visit Outside Caen

Caen makes a great base for exploring the D Day landing sites. Juno Beach and Sword Beach, where British and Canadian forces came ashore, are close by, as is Pegasus Bridge, taken and held by troops following their landing in gliders. Going further back in time, the Bayeux Tapestry, depicting the Battle of Hastings, can be seen in the town of Bayeux. Enjoy some great roads and beautiful scenery in the Suisse Normande, Normandy's Switzerland, experience the French seaside at Deauville, or visit pretty Honfleur for crêpes by the water. The Pays d'Auge area offers a cider route, letting you travel from village to village to see cider presses in action, purchase local products, and, if you're not driving, sample some, too.

Parking And Traffic Information In Caen

As Caen is a port, and a gateway to the rest of France, you can expect the roads to be busy. A ring road keeps through traffic away from the centre, however, and if you are travelling out of the city, it is easy to find your way onto the motorway. The centre of Caen has both on street and underground car parks, and also offers a park and ride service from the outskirts of the city. Keep an eye out for drivers and pedestrians who may not be familiar with driving on the right, and may not be looking in the right direction.
